The term 'landaulet' comes from the German word 'landau' and, in the past, it was used to describe a special vehicle that featured a manually (or later mechanically) retractable cloth roof for the back seat area and a fixed top for the driver's cabin. The production of such magnificent-looking automobiles has roots as far back as 1896. The history of modern landaulet variants at Mercedes-Benz summarizes up to 6 limited series models. Most of the versions produced after the Second World War were ordered by Vatican to be used as papal cars.
